In 1993, the Society opened PEBS Hospital — a 200-bed facility offering free eye surgeries that has since served over 7.1 million patients, performing 2,500+ surgeries annually. Today, PEBS has grown into a multi-specialty healthcare institution offering dental services, free dialysis, cancer surgery, and cardiac care — mostly free of cost for those who cannot afford.
What began with a single operation theatre performing only cataract surgeries has evolved into a state-of-the-art Eye Unit — from diagnostics to keratoplasty, PEBS now provides every form of eye treatment at highly subsidised rates. Over 16,000 corneal grafts and 7.1 million patients served.
Recognising the needs of the underserved population in North Karachi, the hospital expanded to include a Dental & Maxillofacial Surgery Unit, catering to thousands of individuals in the area.
The Ardeshir Cowasjee Department of Radiology & Diagnostic Laboratory opened in 2012, providing imaging, pathology, and diagnostic services to support PEBS's expanding clinical operations.
PEBS further broadened its reach with the addition of a Cardiac & Diabetes Unit, addressing the growing burden of these chronic diseases with cardiac echo & HbA1c labs for early intervention.
The launch of the Free Dialysis Unit provided critical support to those suffering from kidney failure, offering 2,400 dialysis treatments annually — completely free of cost.
In March 2023, PEBS took a groundbreaking step by establishing the Free Oral Cancer Surgery Unit, addressing the high incidence of oral cancer — among the leading causes of death in Pakistan. Over 360 successful surgeries performed, providing life-saving treatment without any financial burden on patients.
In 2024, PEBS launched a Free Breast Cancer Unit with Mammogram and Ultrasound, and then free breast cancer surgeries commenced in 2025; donated by Cowasjee Foundation. This initiative aims to combat the rising number of breast cancer cases in Pakistan, ensuring access to early detection and free treatment.
In collaboration with the Women's Team of Los Angeles, USA, PEBS launched the Gift of Vision Programme in 2023, providing free cataract surgeries in underserved areas. In its first year, the programme performed 5,200 free surgeries in Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab, along with offering free cardiac and diabetes checkups, lab tests, medicines, food aid, wheelchairs, and slippers.
PEBS runs a successful Community Outreach Programme including School Eye Clinics, teacher training for eye screening, awareness seminars, and lectures. The programme has reached over 60,000 children and trained more than 3,500 teachers to conduct eye checks across Pakistan.
