Detecting Vision Problems Early

The PEBS School Eye Clinic is a landmark community outreach programme focused on detecting vision problems in school-going children early, enabling timely intervention, and preventing potential vision loss. Uncorrected vision problems often result in reading difficulties, lack of focus, academic challenges, and school drop-outs.

In May 2025, PEBS signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rotary Club of Heidelberg-Schloß, Germany, to screen 60,000 students in one year, along with a Teachers Training Programme. The project is supported and financed by Rotary Club of Heidelberg-Schloß.

Before this partnership, PEBS had already screened 65,000 students independently. Combined with 42,000 screened under this project so far, the total stands at over 105,000 children whose vision has been protected.

The Screening Process

1. Registration

Students are registered and tested in a quiet, comfortable environment for visual acuity (Snellen’s Chart) and colour vision (Ishihara Chart).

2. Refraction Test

A Refractionist conducts an objective test on an Auto-refractor to detect refractive errors with accuracy and privacy.

3. Eye Examination

An Ophthalmologist performs slit lamp examination and ophthalmoscopy to identify any ocular disorder.

4. Referral & Treatment

If a problem is found, parents receive a referral to PEBS Hospital for full evaluation and free treatment — glasses, exercises, or surgery.
